In high school, my English teachers would always warn my peers and I on how rigorous college writing classes would be, final portfolio reflective essay. For this reason, final portfolio reflective essay, I was skeptical on whether I was going to do well or not when I first enrolled in this writing class.
Since it was an 8 a. class, Final portfolio reflective essay already envisioned myself half awake and barely keeping up with the high amount of never-ending notes we would be taking.
I expected a hundred page readings weekly and ten page papers every few weeks. The first day I was surprised to see how the class was set up because it was smaller than my classes in high school. I expected us forming a circle and engaging in discussions about our readings and general topics about dads. I hoped to learn about the effects of the absence of a father and the different types of fathers that there could be and the varying impacts they have on their children.
I benefit from learning about topics I normally do not talk or hear about because it helps me keep an open mind.
Since the problems at home are not highlighted as much as racial or gender issues, they can be overlooked. However, in this class, I realized that men also are affected by the stereotype that they are useless when raising children and their only use was to be a breadwinner. When it came to the readings, I had a difficult time catching up to the pages Instructor Gray expected us to be on.
It was difficult balancing all my school work and, honestly, I am not a person who reads books as a hobby. I would usually stay up until one or two a. catching up on the readings with my roommate. Through this novel, I learned how to identify the multiple themes a work can have. Also, I learned how the year a novel was published has an effect on how the audience interprets the message.
bad guys and final portfolio reflective essay unconditional love for a child. However, when Instructor Gray suggested the class this book was published as a response to the development of nuclear weapons, another theme could have been the fact that humans are the only ones responsible for destroying humanity.
I learned the importance of language after reading this novel. For example, in the first half, I was disgusted by Humbert and how he would try to justify his actions to the audience, or jury, as he would say. In the second half, I began sympathizing with Humbert because he was no longer justifying his actions.
To the contrary, final portfolio reflective essay, he began recognizing the harm he caused Lolita. One thing I would have done differently is participate more because that way I would feel more confident in myself. Throughout the quarter, Instructor Gray would try her best to attempt to make the class interact and participate. Although I wanted to do so, I decided not to because I would be physically tired, final portfolio reflective essay.
However, no one would say anything most of the time, so I did not learn much from anyone else unless we worked in groups. An example would be when we had to work together to create a practice RIP using a made up speaker, audience, message, medium and genre. It was final portfolio reflective essay to do so because they did not make sense together. I learned that if we can come up with a RIP with random devices, we can successfully do a RIP with devices of our choosing. Although our idea was dark, we successfully used all the devices and that was our goal.
I learned how to think outside the box because at first, I was trying too hard to think about an advertisement that can persuade an elderly person to buy a product. Instead, I would take a nap after class; although, it benefitted me in the moment, it did not benefit me in the long run. If I did ask for help, it would be a week before the assignment was due.
In Writing 39C, I will have to ask for help throughout the course, so I can be reassured I am going in the right direction. In addition, final portfolio reflective essay, I will begin the assignment as soon as I can to have final portfolio reflective essay time to draft and revise. I was never a fan of rewriting drafts. In high school, my final draft would be my first with minimal corrections, final portfolio reflective essay.
After the RA, I know this will not work for college writing. I have to get into the habit of seeking help, whether it is from the instructor or my peers. Throughout this course, final portfolio reflective essay, the majority of the feedback I received was from my instructor. The first time we did peer reviews I was not in class, so I only got feedback from my roommate. It was helpful because she would tell me what I needed to improve in my content, rather than just grammar.
In class, breaking down commercials became more enjoyable over time. I realized we final portfolio reflective essay analyze anything final portfolio reflective essay Instructor Gray suggested the piece could be about the Holocaust because of the image of Hitler playing the harp.
I learned that each part of a text, no matter how small, plays a role in contributing to its purpose. For example, the ducks represented the Jews, the moon was Germany and the sun was the crematory oven. I was dumbfounded by how a seemingly pointless video had a darker meaning; the speaker, audience and the symbols made sense and contributed to make it about the Holocaust.
All the assignments I completed in this class will serve as reflections to learn from my mistakes. My work was mediocre because I did not improve as much as I would have wanted to. I did not improve because I would not look over my mistakes and would just write to complete the assignment. However, final portfolio reflective essay, I did not improve on this because I committed the same mistakes in my RA.
I am still not confident in my writing because I believe my organizational skills and expression of ideas are not at the level they should be, final portfolio reflective essay. I struggle when final portfolio reflective essay what order to place my paragraphs. For example, in my RA, final portfolio reflective essay, I would talk about scenes that occurred in the book out of order.
In one paragraph, I would talk about a scene in which the father died and the next paragraph I would refer to a scene in which he was still alive. I also struggle with using the right words to explain the point I want to get across to my reader. In my RA, I had difficulty final portfolio reflective essay my main ideas because I would excessively use direct quotations to prove my point. The quotations would take the place of when I could not come up with my own analysis.
This excessive use made up the majority of my essay and my analysis was based on them, rather than vice versa. Although I asked Instructor Gray for guidance and feedback, I struggled once again to include my analysis and link it back to the overall message.
I would get confused between the overall message and the obvious message that applies to the characters in the novel, final portfolio reflective essay. If I look back, I can connect it now because I realize I was being too general and I had to specify how the readers can use this message in their lives.
I did not enjoy completing the RA as much as I did with RIP. In the RIP, I made sure to not commit the same mistakes. I created a message that my audience can apply to their daily lives and made sure to keep it consistent throughout my project by not going off topic.
I completed a creative project I enjoyed doing and kept the intended audience and message in mind as I was completing it. This time I found it easier because I was the one developing the message, final portfolio reflective essay, deciding who the audience was, what the genre would be and the medium of my project. Furthermore, I completed similar creative projects in high school, so that could play a role in why I found it easier.
I still feel like the RIP should have been done before the RA because it can serve as practice. Since we are the ones creating the RIP, it would make it easier to identify the intentions of another writer, such as we did in the RA. Writing 37 will be proof that I have endured college writing. It exceeded my expectations because it did not require as much reading and writing as I thought.
I expected to drown myself in the amount of papers I had to write. Instructor Gray made sure to give us time to breathe between essays. Although I feel like I have not improved on my writing, I did attain the skill of analyzing even the smallest of things I see in my everyday life. Reflecting on this class makes me realize I probably will not have another class like this again.
I thought it was a myth that college instructors gave extra credit, played movies and brought donuts to class. But Instructor Gray final portfolio reflective essay all that to be true. I truly enjoyed my experience, but I hope I improve my writing as I proceed to the next step.
I will apply what I learned through my mistakes to the next writing class I take and take advantage of the help instructors are willing to offer to mold myself into the best writer I can be.
